The progressive disintegration of fish fins. Signs Intial signs of fin rot, that may show up are red streaks in the fins caused by congested blood vessels and a lightening of the fin on the outer edge. Then the fin begins to fray and become inflamed. If left untreated it will rot the fin away completely. The infection may even progress futher onto the fishes body. After that death may occur. CauseBacteria is known to cause fin rot. Transmission Infection is caused by bacteria that already reside harmlessly in aquarium water with fish. These bacteria may become a problem when a fish has been injured, poor water conditions are present in the aquarium or maybe the fish has been stressed in some manner. Treatment Immerse the fish in a salt bath(if the fish is salt tolerant) or a medication designed to cure fin rot. Any contributory causes should be removed to aid recovery and the growth of the fins. |
